As the emphasis on the risk prevention and control of chemicals grows, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Chemical Assessment and Sustainability was built with the support of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality on October 1, 2014, based on the chemistry, environment and other related disciplines of Tongji University, and by virtue of the unique international status and rich experience of UN Environment-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainability Department in international communication in the field of environment.
Our laboratory is devoted to controlling and reducing chemical hazards, protecting environment safety and human health, and promoting the sustainable development of national economy. It is research-led, application-oriented, centred upon talent accumulation, and adheres to the key guidelines of social work. This laboratory provides technical support and policy suggestions on the chemical risk prevention and control for China and the world.
Aimed at the international research forefront and the major national needs, the laboratory studies the analysis and monitoring methods of new chemicals, the mechanism of chemical migration and transformation, the theory and method of risk assessment, and the pollution control of toxic chemicals. The research center of chemical analysis, risk assessment and control with international influence in theory, technology and personnel training is founded by sharing data and research results with the Policy Implementation Division and the Early Warning Division of the United Nations Environment Programme.
At present, the laboratory consists of one platform, eight core research teams, four main research directions including chemical analysis and monitoring, chemical migration and transformation, chemical risk assessment and chemical pollution control. The research team is mainly composed of teachers of chemistry and environmental science from IESD and Tongji University. Up till now, there are 43 permanent researchers, including 41 professors with senior title and 2 professors with intermediate title. 11 professors have been selected into national talent projects and 10 have been selected into provincial ones.
