As one of the earliest institutions dedicated to environmental higher education and research in China, CESE (College of Environmental Science and Engineering) of Tongji University(TJU) takes the important mission of providing support for solving national and regional major environmental problems and implementing sustainable development strategy.

It originally developed from the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage established in 1952 and the Department of Environmental Engineering established in 1981. The College of Environmental Engineering was established in 1988 and officially renamed as College of Environmental Science and Engineering in 1998.

For the global environmental and sustainable development education and research, UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development(IESD) was jointly established by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Tongji University in 

2002.

After years of effort, CESE has been formed the discipline construction pattern of “three departments and one institute” with top-class professional team and strong scientific research foundation. It has become an important high-level talents cultivation base and scientific research center in China.

Disciplinary construction: Environmental Science and Engineering was selected as “first-class discipline”, evaluated A+ in the fourth-round national discipline ranking; Water Supply and Sewerage Science and Engineering and Environmental Engineering selected as national first-class undergraduate construction discipline. Environmental Science discipline ranked 51~100 in QS World University Rankings.
