Recently, the research team led by Prof. Yayi Wang from CESE published their latest findings in Nature Water. Their research uncovers the siderophore-mediated iron uptake mechanism in anammox bacteria and highlights the essential role of siderophores in regulating both nitrogen and iron metabolic pathways. The introduction of exogenous siderophores into anammox systems significantly increased iron uptake efficiency to 50%–65%, selectively boosted the activity and abundance of anammox bacteria, and ultimately increased total nitrogen removal efficiency by over 60%. These findings fill a key theoretical gap in the iron metabolism of anammox bacteria, advance our insight into their physiological traits, and provide an innovative technical pathway for the optimization and regulation of the anammox process.
