On March 7, 2025, the College of Environmental Science and Engineering (CESE) convened a high-level "Consultation Meeting on Environmental Talent Cultivation Reform and Revision of Training Programs." The event gathered a distinguished group of experts and alumni representing government agencies, research institutes, industry leaders, and academic organizations. Among the participants were Qu Jining from the Shanghai Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau; Chen Hua from the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; Wang Ruqi from the Shanghai Water Supply Management Affairs Center; Hu Yuanying of the Shanghai Young Science and Technology Talents Association; and several senior engineers and executives from leading organizations including Philips Healthcare, Shanghai Urban Construction Design & Research Institute, and China Railway Shanghai Engineering Bureau Group.
These experts and alumni contributed valuable perspectives and practical recommendations to support CESE’s ongoing efforts to reform talent cultivation strategies and revise its training curriculum. Professor Xu Bin, Party Secretary of the College, and Dean Wang Zhiwei, along with department heads and representatives from key administrative offices, were in attendance. The meeting was chaired by Professor Liu Jia, Deputy Director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Environmental Science and Engineering.
Dean Wang Zhiwei opened the meeting with a welcoming address, expressing gratitude for the support and engagement of all participants. Professor Liu Jia followed with a detailed report on the current status of education and teaching within the college, highlighting existing challenges and outlining proposed adjustments to the training programs. The session created a collaborative platform for dialogue between academia, industry, and government stakeholders, reinforcing CESE’s commitment to aligning its educational goals with the evolving needs of the environmental sector.

During the discussion session, participating experts offered a wealth of insightful recommendations aimed at enhancing CESE’s talent cultivation strategies. Their suggestions covered a broad spectrum, including refining the objectives of talent development, optimizing curriculum structure, adjusting training programs, and innovating training models. A key point of emphasis was the need to deepen the integration of government-university-enterprise collaboration. Experts encouraged the university to actively promote co-development of courses, introduce innovative teaching tools, and establish high-quality internship and practical training bases to bridge academic learning with industry application.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Xu Bin emphasized that the college will continue to strengthen its collaboration with government bodies, enterprises, public institutions, and organizations employing CESE alumni. He stressed the importance of equipping students with the skills needed to address real-world environmental challenges and reaffirmed the college’s mission to nurture a new generation of top-tier professionals committed to advancing ecological civilization in the new era.
