Academician Xu Zuxin's Team Contributes to Hainan's Water Governance Issues

On July 12, 2023, the “Six Waters Co-governance” on-site meeting in Hainan Province was held in Sanya to redeploy and advance the “Six Waters Co-governance” project throughout the province. Feng Fei, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, gave a speech and provincial leaders, including Governor Liu Xiaoming, attended the meeting. At the meeting, Academician Xu Zuxin made a speech on the theme of rural domestic sewage resource utilization, and relevant leaders from all counties and cities in the province attended the meeting for learning.

Academician Xu Zuxin, combining long-term water pollution control and Hainan practice experience, systematically analyzed the problems existing in the treatment of rural domestic sewage in Hainan, China, from the two dimensions of design and engineering. She elaborated on the key elements concerning the effectiveness of rural sewage treatment from four aspects: governance model, drainage path, sewage collection, and system governance. She innovatively proposed three major modes and six implementation paths for the management of domestic sewage in suburban villages, resource utilization or standard discharge management of domestic sewage in remote waterfront villages, and resource utilization management of domestic sewage in remote villages without river channels or scattered farmers. This has important guiding significance for the Hainan Province to improve the effectiveness of rural domestic sewage treatment.

Feng Fei, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Liu Xiaoming, Governor, and other comrades who attended the meeting, observed a pilot project of rural domestic sewage resource utilization in Shangtang Village, Sanya City, which was technically led by Academician Xu Zuxin from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University. They fully affirmed the scientific consultation and technical support provided by Academician Xu Zuxin and her team to the “Six Waters Co-governance” campaign in the province for more than a year, providing Tongji wisdom for rural sewage treatment in Hainan Province.
