In July 2023, the National University of Science and Technology Innovation and Excellent Scientific Research Achievement Awards Conference was held in Beijing, China. The conference announced the ‘Decision on the Awards for Excellent Achievements in Scientific Research (Science and Technology) of Higher Education Institutions for 2021 and 2022.’ The project ‘Key Technologies and Applications for the Full Process Management of Odor from Domestic Waste, led by Professor He Pinjing, won first prize for scientific and technological progress. The project took 26 years to systematically tackle key problems and innovatively develop technologies for the full process management of odors from domestic waste sources. It broke through the technical bottleneck of fingerprint identification of key odor-causing compounds from domestic waste sources and solved the problems of high energy consumption in odor collection, low collection efficiency, and unstable treatment effects. The results supported the construction and stable operation of major projects, such as the Shanghai Laogang Base (the largest sanitation facility group in the world), Shanghai Expo Park, and Shanghai Bioenergy Reuse Project (currently the largest perishable waste resource treatment project in East China). It has improved the standard system for odor pollution control in China’s domestic waste treatment industry, guided technological innovation, and promoted healthy development in the field of domestic waste deodorization.
