Professor Yu Hanqing, an alumnus of CESE, was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On November 22, 2023, an official announcement of the results of the 2023 academic election by the Chinese Academy of Engineering was released. Yu Hanqing, who completed an MSc in Environmental Engineering in 1986 and a PhD in Environmental Engineering in 1989, was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Yu Hanqing, a male born in October 1966 of Han ethnicity, was from Wuwei City, Anhui Province. He is currently the Executive Director and Professor of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China. He obtained his Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from Tongji University in 1989 and his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Tongji University in 1994. He has conducted research work at Newcastle University in the UK, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and University of Hong Kong. In 2006, he received funding from the "National Distinguished Young Scientists Program." In 2007, he was selected as a specially appointed professor under the "Changjiang Scholars Program." In 2017, he was selected as a leading talent under the "National Thousand Talents Program." In 2023, he was elected by an academic at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Alumnus Yu Hanqing has engaged in fundamental research, technological development, and practical applications for water pollution control over an extended period. He has accomplished a series of accomplishments in areas such as aerobic granular sludge wastewater treatment technology, wastewater treatment plant monitoring/operation, and the anaerobic targeted transformation of pollutants. He has published over 700 papers, with a total citation count of more than 42,000, and holds over 60 authorized invention patents. His achievements included receiving a second-class National Natural Science Award, a second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award, and six first-class provincial and ministerial-level Science and Technology/Natural Science Awards. He has been honored with titles , such as the National Model Teacher, National Advanced Worker, and National Excellent. Ph.D. Supervisor, and Expert with Special Allowance from the State Council.
