On January 18, 2024, the College of Environmental Science and Engineering and the School of Economics and Management at Tongji University jointly conducted an interdisciplinary collaboration and academic exchange event on the theme of "Environmental Science and Accounting" dual degree program, carbon neutrality, and sustainable development. Professor Qiu Yuping, the director of the Department of Environmental Science, and Professor Bai Yunxia, the director of the Department of Accounting, delivered speeches emphasizing the importance of the "Environmental Science and Accounting" dual degree program in serving the national "dual-carbon" strategy. Both sides will collaborate in nurturing innovative and top-notch talent in the field of dual-carbon, aligned with national strategic goals and urgent societal needs, to achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes.
Dr. Guo Peiyuan, Chairman of Sustainability, was invited to deliver a lecture on the topic of "ESG and Carbon Disclosure.” He discussed the importance and fundamental principles of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG), and delved into the relationship between ESG and climate change. Guo explains how ESG investors can incorporate climate factors into their assessments.
He also introduced carbon disclosure standards and provided a detailed explanation of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework and its disclosure requirements for companies.
The dual-degree program of "Environmental Science and Accounting, " designed to cultivate composite talent, was approved by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in June 2023. It was jointly constructed by the College of Environmental Science and Engineering and School of Economics and Management at Tongji University. This program adopts an innovative development concept for nurturing talent in the field of "dual-carbon", focusing on "environmental green technology" and "carbon management-related knowledge". It aims to cultivate outstanding composite talents with knowledge in the "five-carbon" areas (carbon science, carbon technology, carbon accounting, carbon auditing, and carbon management).
This event not only provided an opportunity for students at Tongji University to engage in in-depth discussions with industry experts but also laid a solid foundation for the future development of the "Environmental Science and Accounting" dual degree program. The two sides will continue to deepen their cooperation and collaborate in furthering the implementation of this program.
