By 2024, which marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Norway, the two countries have long engaged in friendly international cooperation in the field of environmental protection, including strengthening environmental governance, addressing climate change, and achieving sustainable development. They have also been actively promoting scientific research collaboration and facilitating cooperation and exchanges between scientists from both nations. With support from the Research Council of Norway (RCN), Tongji University hosted the second Sino-Norwegian Joint International Graduate Winter Camp from February 17th to February 25, 2024. The event was organized by the College of Environmental Science and Engineering at Tongji University. More than 30 faculty members, researchers, and students from eight research institutions, including the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tongji University, Xiamen University, and East China Normal University, participated in this winter camp.
On February 17th and 18th, the participants presented and discussed scientific issues in the field of environmental science, with a focus on environmental microplastics. The seminar was hosted by Professor Lu Zhibo, Vice Dean of CESE. Experts and scholars, including Professor Lin Sije and Dorte Herzke, a senior scientist from the Norwegian Institute for Air Research and students from both China and Norway, engaged in discussions on the characteristics of environmental microplastic pollution, ecological effects, and health risks.
From February 19th to 25th, more than 20 faculty members and students, under the guidance of Professor Lu Zhibo, conducted a field investigation in the Yulong Snow Mountain region, specifically the Bai Shuihe No.1 Glacier and its surrounding areas in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. During this field trip, they engaged in exchanges and discussions with faculty members and students from the Yulong Snow Mountain Cryosphere and Sustainable Development National Field Scientific Observation Research Station (formerly known as the Chinese Academy of Sciences Yulong Snow Mountain Glacier and the Environment Observation Research Station, abbreviated as Yulong Snow Mountain Station).
The winter camp provided a platform for scientists and students from China and Norway to share and exchange ideas, aiming to promote academic exchanges and international cooperation in the field of microplastic research. Its aim is to inspire research perspectives, enhance research capabilities, and contribute to the development of environmental protection.
