The second International Symposium on Endocrine Disruptors (EDCs) was held at Tongji University from 17-20 Oct. More than 50 experts in the relevant fields from Sweden, the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Japan, China and other nations attended the meeting. Focusing on topics including the exposure levels and changing trend of EDCs in environmental media, human tissues/organs, and the toxic effect of EDCs on various model organisms, wildlife as well as their risks for human health, the participants discussed over the latest research progress.
Executive Vice President of Tongji University, Professor Wu Jiang showed up at the symposium and gave a welcome speech. As he pointed out, environmental pollution and its health hazards are important questions for the sustainable development of human beings and the environment, which has drawn great attention from the government and all sectors of society in not only China but also around the world. Among different challenges, the problem of endocrine disruptors is a very important direction that requires much attention. The globally academic communication on endocrine disruptors research will play a positive role in promoting the research and development of EDCs problems in China and help promote environmental science research and the further work of sustainable development in our country. Ms. Lisette Lindahl, Consul general of Sweden in Shanghai, attended the meeting, and delivered a speech. She said that chemical pollution is a global problem, and the seminar co-hosted by China and Switzerland is of great significance for academic cooperation and exchange on a global scale.
Ake Bergman, the executive director of the Swedish Toxicology Research Center (Swetox), as well as Professor Yin DaQiang of CESE, Tongji University, director of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of the Yangtze River Water Environment, took up the position of the joint chairman for the meeting. 22 experts made special reports at the meeting, including academician Jiang Guibin from the Chinese Academy of Sciences ecological environmental research center as well as other domestic and foreign well-known scholars in the field,. This meeting has facilitated mutual understanding, exchanges, and cooperation among scientists working on EDCs around the world, and played an important role in promoting and improving the development level of theory, technology as well as management in this field. Through in-depth communication and collision, it is beneficial to diagnose and identify the existing problems for endocrine disruptor research in China and help expand China's international influence in the environmental EDCs research field.
The symposium was hosted by Tongji University, Sweden Toxicology Research Center, National Natural Science Fund Committee, as well as the National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment jointly. And it was undertaken by planning of introducing intelligence, College of Environmental Science and Engineering at Tongji University, the Yangtze River Water Environment Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Research, Shanghai institute of pollution control and ecological security as well as Reer Technology jointly
