The Environmental Engineering Department is one of the earliest-founded departments on environmental engineering disciplines in China. The Department was established by a celebrated environmental protection scientist Prof. Hu Jiajun in 1978. It is selected as “National Key Discipline”, “Shanghai Key Discipline”, “National Characteristic Major”, the first pilot discipline of “Outstanding Engineer Training Program” of the Ministry of Education, “Double First-Class Discipline” and “First-Class Undergraduate Major”.

Environmental Engineering Department has participated in a number of major ecological and environmental engineering projects locally and nationwide and won a wide range of national, ministerial, and provincial levels of science and technology awards. With many excellent teachers and national-level telants, various courses have been awarded National and Shanghai Excellent Courses. The Department has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents in the environmental discipline and enjoying a high reputation around the world.

The research fields in the Department include wastewater treatment and resource recovery, Regional and watershed water pollution control, urban water management and non-point source pollution control, solid waste treatment and resource recovery, hazardous waste disposal and utilization, air pollution control, new energy and environmental materials, clean production, etc.
