At the recently concluded plenary session of the 2024 World Young Scientist Summit (WYSS 2024), the winners of the esteemed 18th China Youth Science and Technology Award were announced. Among the nation's 99 elite young scientists recognized, Professor Chu Wenhai from Tongji University's College of Environmental Science and Engineering stood out prominently.

Professor Chu Wenhai is a renowned expert in water quality risk identification and system control. His groundbreaking research in analyzing and identifying key water pollutants, their process transformations, and collaborative control strategies has led to significant technical advancements and practical applications. He has directed projects that have been funded by prestigious organizations like the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and have also been included in the National Science and Technology Major Project and the National Key Research and Development Program of China. His academic contributions include 120 high-level papers, five monographs in both Chinese and English, and over 30 domestic and international invention patents. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in developing seven water quality standards and technical guidelines. Professor Chu holds several esteemed positions within the international scientific community, including Vice Chairman of the International Water Association Young Water Professionals China (IWA YWP China), Secretary-General of the IWA Disinfection Group, Vice Chairman of the China Committee on Water Biosafety of IWA, Associate Editor of two international journals, Director of the Youth Editorial Board of China Water & Wastewater, and Vice Director of the Youth Editorial Board of Water & Wastewater Engineering.
The China Youth Science and Technology Award, jointly initiated by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, recognizes young scientists who have made exceptional contributions to national economic development, social progress, and scientific and technological innovation. The award aims to inspire innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship among young scientists and is selected once every two years, with no more than 100 winners honored in each session.
