On April 2, 2024, Ms. Sara Valentine, Assistant Director of Global Initiatives at the University of California, Berkeley (hereinafter referred to as Berkeley), visited to strengthen the connection between Berkeley and Tongji University and to promote deeper collaboration in student training.
At the session, Deputy Director Li Jing warmly welcomed Ms. Sara Valentine and provided a brief overview of Tongji’s collaborations with American universities. She highlighted Tongji University's international cooperation strengths, including partnerships with European and American institutions, international academic platforms, research collaborations, and a globally engaged faculty. Li emphasized the broad potential and significance of such educational exchanges and collaborations. She also acknowledged Berkeley as a long-term partner of Tongji and expressed hope that this visit would further deepen cooperation between the two universities in talent cultivation and scientific research.Ms. Sara Valentine introduced Berkeley’s rich history, academic strengths, campus life, and international exchange programs to the audience. She expressed Berkeley’s desire to establish even closer ties with Tongji, aiming to jointly nurture globally minded and innovative talents. Following the session, Ms. Valentine engaged with students from the 2024 Fall Tongji-UCB 3+1+1 Dual Degree Program, providing detailed answers to their questions about academic research, study abroad applications, and future career paths.
This exchange not only deepened students’ understanding of Berkeley and supported the dual degree program but also strengthened the college’s experience in U.S. collaboration. It laid a solid foundation for future initiatives such as summer schools and joint faculty appointments, aligning with the broader direction of enhanced cooperation with U.S. institutions in this new phase.
