On May 28, the 18th "Challenge Cup" Shanghai College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition ended successfully. The project "Technology equipment for in-situ recycling of community wet waste based on ultra-high temperature aerobic fermentation" guided by Prof. Dong Bin of CESE, Tongji won the special prize of the competition.
Project Introduction
With the implementation of the household garbage classification policy in China, the output of sorted wet garbage in communities has surged, and the collection volume of wet garbage in Shanghai communities has reached 10,000 tons/day. Wet garbage is prone to corruption and odor, pathogen transmission, and high transportation cost. This work designs a miniaturized ultra-high temperature aerobic fermentation technology equipment that can rapidly degrade wet garbage at collection points in the community, so as to achieve the goals of reducing volume, rotting, disinfection, and odorless. The treated products do not need to be shipped out, and can be used as in-situ resources for community greening soil, the project truly realizes the new model of "zero waste" treatment of community wet waste from the table to the green space, and helps the construction of "waste free city" and "low-carbon community".
Team members: Xinru Zhong, Siying Feng and Guohao Li (undergraduates majoring in environmental engineering), Chunyu Zhu (undergraduates majoring in water supply and drainage Science and Engineering).
It is reported that since the launch of this competition, nearly 50,000 college students in the city have participated in the school-level selection contest, and a total of more than 10,000 entries have been declared. After layers of selection, a total of 528 works from 48 universities in the city were shortlisted for the city competition, with an increase of more than 7%. After the school selection, our school submitted a total of 14 works to participate in the city finals, won 3 grand prizes, 4 first prizes, 4 second prizes, and 2 third prizes, and once again won the "Winner's Cup".
All along, our college has attached great importance to students' science and innovation, highlighted the practice of educating people, built a strong platform, pooled resources, created a positive atmosphere for science and innovation, explored the construction of a teacher-student co-creation ecology, and cultivated students' academic aspirations. Nearly 35% of the students participate in various discipline competitions and win more than 200 awards each year. In the future, our college will continue to strive to build a scientific and technological innovation talent training platform with progressive support throughout the whole process and all-around resource matching, leading environmental students to forge ahead, pursue excellence, and walk with the motherland's ecological and environmental protection cause.
