Good news! Our school's water supply and drainage science and engineering, environmental engineering majors were selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites

The Ministry of Education has recently released the 2019 annual list of national and provincial first-class undergraduate majors. A total of 23 majors in Tongji University were selected as the national first-class undergraduate majors, ranking first in Shanghai. For CESE, both Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering were selected as the national first-class undergraduate majors.

With the ambition of becoming a World-Class University with Chinese Characteristics, Tongji University has always persisted in the original intention of progressing with China and rejuvenating the Chinese nation with science and education. And Tongji has continued to promote the transformation and application of scientific research achievements. Relying on the first-class major platform, CESE will insist on the fundamental task of cultivating virtue and educating people, and will carry the responsibility of undertaking social service, so as to promote the development of its professional fields. CECE will keep in mind our first heart and our mission, to contribute Tongji wisdom for keeping the sky clear, water clean, and land pure.

CESE, Tongji University, is the first environmental education and academic research institution established in China. Its predecessor was the Department of Water Supply and Drainage in 1952 and the Department of Environmental Engineering in 1981. Then in 1988, the College of Environmental Engineering was established and was renamed the College of Environmental Science and Engineering in 1998. In order to promote scientific research and train professionals in the field of the global environment and sustainable development, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Tongji University jointly established the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD), which brought the environmental subject of Tongji University into a new stage of global environmental education and scientific research.

In 2013, CESE Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering major ranked first in the national first-grade subject of Civil Engineering and top three in the national first-grade subject of Environmental Science and Engineering. In 2017, CESE ranked A+ in the 4th round of national subject assessment, was selected as a national first-class subject, and was selected for the Shanghai Environmental and Ecological Summit Subject Program. In 2018, for the first time, CESE made it into the top 51~100 among QS subject rankings.

Currently, CESE has three departments including Municipal Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science, as well as the Institute of Environmental Planning and Management, and three secondary majors of Municipal Engineering (also known as Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering), Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science. All three majors have a well-developed education program for undergraduates and postgraduates seeking their bachelor, master, doctoral degree, and well-developed postdoctoral programs as well. Among the three majors, Environmental Engineering is a national key subject and Shanghai key subject, while Municipal Engineering is a national key subject. CESE has several national teaching and research institutions such as the National Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Research, the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the National Engineering Research Center of Urban Pollution Control, as well as the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of Yangtze River Water Environment. CESE also has a series of scientific research and technological development institutions, integrating training professionals, scientific research and development, and technological activities, enjoying a high degree of reputation in China and abroad.
