In the World Skills Competition Shanghai qualification race, which was concluded on September 20th, CESE 2019 doctoral student Jiao Heming won the championship of the “Water Treatment Technology” event. “Water Treatment Technology” is a regular event of the World Skills Competition. The Shanghai qualification raceexamines the competitors in the following aspects: Key skills in water treatment techniques, knowledge about cutting-edge technology, and their advanced equipment, etc. Not only does it challenge the competitor’s skills, understanding of mechanics, and handling of unexpected situations, it is also extremely demanding in terms of their stamina, endurance, composure, and presentation skills.
The competition has six major modules: Coagulation techniques, water quality analysis skills, Edukit PA equipment operation and maintenance techniques, membrane treatment techniques, wastewater treatment equipment operation and maintenance techniques, and experiment report writing. Jiao Heming gave us an overview of his experience and his reflections. In the 10 months since he received his competition notice, he first had two weeks of online training program on the basics. Upon returning to school, then he began intensive weekly training according to his plan. Since Jiao’s expertise does not involve electrical control, when he first encountered the EdukitPA equipment, he had to integrate his knowledge in water treatment technology with his practice in learning the basics of electrical machinery and understanding the operational mechanics of the equipment. After that, he continues to observe problems and take stock of his training exercise, so as to improve his speed and quality in the competition. The EDS membrane treatment and wastewater treatment projects are particularly complex and new to Jiao, which require significant time to understand the operation processes. Only by following a set of high standards set could he achieve the desired results.During the competition, try to be at your best and give it all you got. Stay alert, keep calm, and handle unexpected situations expeditiously.” This is Jiao’s tips for the team on how he achieved good results in the competition.
The World Skills Competition is held every two years and is known as the "World Skills Olympics". The 46th World Skills Final will be held in Shanghai in September 2021. As a “double first-class” key subject, Tongji Environmental Science and Engineering subject has always insisted on training international professionals in science and engineering. Since the beginning of this year’s competition, CESE has attached great importance to the training of the participants and the construction of the training site. Recently, the 46th World Skills Competition "Water Treatment Technology" event was concluded. It was organized by Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau and co-hosted by Tongji University and Shanghai Environmental Science School.
As the champion of the "Water Treatment Technology" event in Shanghai, CESE doctoral student Jiao Heming will represent Shanghai’s skilled youngsters and compete in the first Vocational Skills Competition of the PRC to be held in Guangzhou in two months. We look forward to seeing him shine on stage at the 46th World Skills Competition Finals!
