The 2nd International Workshop on Endocrine Disruptors (EDCs) was held at Tongji University on October 17 to 20. More than 50 well-known experts in related fields from Sweden, the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Japan, China and other countries attended the meeting. The meeting focused on the latest research progress of exposure level and trending of EDCs in environmental media and human tissues/organs, their toxic effects on various model animals and wild animals, as well as their health risks to humans.
Professor Wu Jiang, Vice Dean of Tongji University, delivered a welcome speech at the meeting. He pointed out that environmental pollutants and their health hazards are important issues that concern the sustainable development of mankind and the environment. They have attracted great attention from the government and all sectors of society in China and all over the world. The research of EDCs is well worthy of attention. This academic communication about the research of endocrine disruptors on a global scale will play a positive role in promoting China’s research and development in this field, as well as advancing environmental scientific research and sustainable development in China. Ms. Lisette Lindahl, Consul General of Sweden in Shanghai, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. She mentioned that chemical pollution is a global problem. The workshop, which is jointly sponsored by China and Sweden, is a global academic cooperation of great significance.
The meeting was co-chaired by Professor Åke Bergman, Executive Director of the Swedish Toxicology Research Center (Swetox), who is also the high-end foreign expert from Tongji University, and Professor Yin Daqiang, Director of the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education for Yangtze River Water Environment, who is also from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University. Twenty-two experts gave keynote lectures, including Academician Jiang Guibin from the Research Center for Ecological Environment of the Chinese Academy of Science and other well-known scholars in this field. This conference promoted mutual understanding, and cooperation among scientists involved in EDCs research around the world, and played an important role in promoting the development level of theory, technology and management in this field. Through in-depth communication, it is helpful to identify the problems in the research of endocrine disruptors in China, and expand China's international influence in the field of environmental EDCs research.
The conference was co-sponsored by Tongji University, Swedish Toxicology Research Center, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center. It was jointly organized by Tongji University’s Talent Introduction Program, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education for Yangtze River Water Environment, State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Utilization, Shanghai Institute of Pollution Control and Ecological Safety, and Reer Technology (Reer).
