On August 27- September 1, 2018, the international summer school with the theme of "Water-Energy Nexus in Urban Water System" was successfully held at Tongji University. 17 graduate students from more than ten countries including Brazil, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Jordan, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and Turkey, participated in the summer school.
The International Summer School is one of the regular activities of the "Sustainable Water Management Network in Developing Countries", undertaken by Tongji University. The Sustainable Water Management Network for Developing Countries is funded by DAAD Germany and coordinated by the Brunswick Polytechnic University of Germany. The network includes branches in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. Tongji University is the only member of the network in China.
Dean Dai attended the summer school and met with relevant teachers and students. Professor Norbert Ditchl, Chair of the Network for Sustainable Water Management in Developing Countries, attended and addressed the summer school at Brunswick Polytechnic University in Germany. Professor Andreas Haarstrick, the science coordinator for the Sustainable Water Management Network in developing countries, and professor at the Polytechnic University of Brunswick, Germany, introduced the basic purpose of the summer school. Professor Mukand Babel and Dr. Victor R. Shinde of The Asian Institute of Technology introduced the basic concept and calculation method of an urban hydro-energy bond. Dr. Wu Bing, Dr. Niu Dongjie, Dr. Li Zhuo, and Dr. Wang Hongtao introduced energy consumption and recycling in sewage and sludge treatment. This summer school includes classroom teaching, group discussion, on-site visit, and so on.
