On July 15, 2018, the two-week Italian Summer School officially began. This Italian Summer School of Environmental Engineering is supported by the Undergraduate School of Tongji University, the College of China and Italy and the College of Environmental Science and Engineering. Professor Li Yongmei, Professor Xie Li and Associate Professor Wang Lin lead 20 students of environmental engineering to visit four cities: Rome, Florence, Bologna and Venice. Through conversations with Italian environmental protection organizations and professors, the students visited the environmental engineering facilities and urban environmental protection infrastructure in Italy. In the exchange and communication under different cultural backgrounds, the students learned and broadened their horizons.
First stop: Rome
On the morning of July 16th, students communicated with Polieco, the Italian Association of Recycled Plastics and visited the solid waste sorting and treatment plant. The President of Polieco association warmly welcomed the teachers and students of Polieco. The leader of Polieco gave a detailed introduction on the service content, purpose and other aspects of the organization. At the meeting, Professor Li Yongmei of our college also communicated with each other on the teaching and scientific research of the college, showing the characteristics and style of our college, and also introducing the policy and current situation of waste plastic recycling in China.
The students talked with the Polieco team about how to recycle and dispose waste plastic and Chinese current policy of banning the waste. From this activity, students learned that the industry association helps to ensure efficient treatment of plastic waste and better allocation of resources.
On the afternoon of July 16, the Waste Plastics Association arranged students to visit the solid waste pre-treatment and sorting factory, where waste paper, waste plastics and waste glass were pre-sorted, and then sent to their own special treatment plants for recycling. It is worth mentioning that waste plastics are classified according to quality and color and made into different kinds and prices of particles to ensure efficient treatment.
Through conversations and visits, students learned about the current waste plastic recycling process and methods in Italy, understood the key processes and steps of recycled plastic treatment and recycling, and expanded their professional knowledge.
The Vatican, the Colosseum, the Roman City Square
Vatican is a nation within nation, located in Rome, which is the cultural capital of Italy. Here, in addition to learning professional knowledge, students had transcultural communication by visiting St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican Museum, and felt the unique cultural atmosphere.
The structure of the Colosseum is complex and magnificent, and the ancient Roman City Square retains the ruins of the ancient Roman city with rich details, from which we can see the architectural characteristics of that age. During the visit, the students found that these ancient buildings were all built with scientific and complex water supply and drainage systems.
Second stop: Florence
To Study Renaissance art and culture
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. After the students majoring in environmental engineering came to Florence, in addition to the cognitive study of professional knowledge, the school also arranged the discussion and study of cultural knowledge.
In the Bagero Gallery, a professor from the Art Department of the University of Florence introduced several pieces of sculpture of great fame in details, from relevant allusions to artistic evaluation, precisely and detailed, showing the prosperous cultural state of the Renaissance.
To understand the drainage culture of the ancient city of Florence
On a visit to the Bajaro Gallery, students discovered that the simple drainage Wells also had hidden agendas.
The ruins of the drainage channel in the municipal Square show the rich financial resources of the Medici family, and also their outstanding wisdom in the construction of the drainage and water supply system.
At the same time, during the investigation in Florence, members of the city team found the eutrophication issue of the water body of Arno River, and through observation and interviews, they learned that part of the domestic sewage in the old city was still discharged directly into arno River, which caused a serious impact on the water. On this basis, they also put forward suggestions on the reconstruction of old polluted urban areas, and put what they have learned into practice.
Environmental courses and energy conservation museums
Two professors from the University of Florence, Prof. Marco Sala and PhD. Rosa Romano, introduced the knowledge of environmental protection and energy saving building to the students, during which they actively asked questions and exchanged professional knowledge with teachers. After the course, the teacher also showed everyone around the nearby energy conservation museum and gave them a detailed explanation.
Through the overall study and visit, students have gained a better understanding of Italy's environmental protection policy and environmental protection and energy saving buildings. It is believed that they will be better promoted after returning to China by combining relevant knowledge.
Opening ceremony
At 3:30 PM on July 20th, in Villa Strozzi, teachers and students from the Schools of Environment, Architecture, Art and Communication gathered together and held the opening ceremony of the summer school of the Overseas Campus of Tongji University in Florence. Li Yurui, a student of our college, gave a speech on the schedule, which was highly praised by all.
Third stop: Bologna
Hera, an Italian environmental operation company Frullo incineration plant,
Hera warmly welcomed our teachers and students and introduced the scope of operation, current situation and relevant information.
In our communication with Frullo incineration plant, we learned that Italy has a more reasonable method of waste separation and collection, so that the moisture content of waste received by Bologna incineration plant is about 20%-25% and the calorific value is about 12000kJ/kg. This also provides reference significance for the development of garbage classification in our country, which arouses students' thinking.
During the visit, the students found that the plant waste incineration automatic control and detection equipment is quite complete, advanced, the site contains two independent running incineration lines, can realize heat and power co-generation, so that the energy is better used.
Hera operation the IDAR wastewater treatment plant
IDAR wastewater treatment plant formulates a whole set of sewage and sludge treatment methods according to water characteristics and treatment requirements. The main process adopted by the wastewater treatment plant is AO, the primary sedimentation tank and denitrification are coupled in the inner and outer rings of the same tank, and the biological treatment is used the pure oxygen aeration. The sludge incineration unit of wastewater treatment plant can also realize direct incineration treatment of sludge from outside, which can be used for heat and power co-supply.
The Hera company provides professional introductions and a great lunch. Through this exchange, students understood sewage and sludge treatment technology, learned and consolidated more professional knowledge.
Fourth stop: Venice Watertown
Water City - Venice and water quality survey
After a train journey of more than two hours, the students and teachers arrived in Venice from Bologna. Venice is a water sensitive city, the whole city is built on and from water. The river covers the whole city and connects the traffic of whole city. Bridges and corridors are located, and ships are busy. Students learned that 60% of water in Venice in is from Po river, and 30-40% of water is a lagoon formed by seawater pouring back into the silt marshes in the islands. Venice has no special wastewater treatment plant. The sewage discharge is mainly into the Grand Canal.
Through the investigation of the water quality of Venice river, it is found that the water quality of the river far from the estuary is poor, and even some of the water in the river has turned black and green.
During the 13 days' journey, our students not only visited Italy, but also learned a lot of professional knowledge. This cognitive practice is based on the learning of professional basic courses. The new technology has broadened students' horizon, and the visit to the actual operation site has also become the cognitive cornerstone for students to learn professional courses in the future.
After visiting, studying, investigating, reporting and communicating, the students' abilities in understanding, proposing and solving problems have been greatly improved, and they have made a big step from basic to profession.
