Theme Activity of World Environment Day: "Plastic Battle Quick Fix" -- teachers and students of our college entered the Foreign language School and Experimental Middle school of Ningbo High-tech Zone

The concept of microplastics was first proposed by British scientists in 2004, when they published a paper on plastic debris in Marine waters and sediments in Science. Since then, the issue of microplastics has attracted great attention from all sectors of society. The United Nations Environment Assembly has listed Marine plastic waste pollution as one of the "ten pressing environmental issues", and the theme of this year's World Environment Day has also been designated as "Plastic Battle Quick Fix".

On June 5th, our college held a special popular science education activity on the theme of Environment Day. Teachers and students went to Ningbo High-tech Zone Foreign Language School and Ningbo High-tech Zone Experimental High School. Together with more than 700 students, they started the "Plastic Battle Quick Fix" Marine environmental protection scientific trip. Through scientific lectures, keynote speeches, experimental experience, painting creation, knowledge questions and so on, which helped the students enjoy the charm of the undersea world and understand the environmental crisis facing by the Marine ecology in a series of interesting themed activities. During the activity, the students correctly understood the function in the life of all kinds of plastic and its potential environmental risk and hands-on participated in scientific experiments of “discovering the microplatics in life” to experience the magic and challenges from the scientific practice. In the meantime, they solemnly gave the promises of being little environmental guards, which need them to shoulder the burden of protecting earth's environment, and experienced the development and happy from environmental protection by small hands in big hands.

This activity is carefully planned by Professor Lu Zhibo's team and Associate Professor Huang Qinghui in our college. The content of the activity is closely centered on the theme of World Environment Day, and it aims to enlighten and educate teenagers to set up the concept of protecting the environment and cherishing resources from an early age through an all-round and multi-means of activities. The activity made full use of the laboratory's own advantages in scientific research, talents and resources to promote environmental awareness and environmental science knowledge into the classroom; focused on environmental education for young people, improve children's environmental science literacy, enhance the consciousness, initiative and scientificity of whole society to participate in environmental protection, providing services for the comprehensive promotion of ecological civilization construction. The activity was also attended by Xu Xiaoyan, a teacher from College of Materials, Mr. Shen Jian from Shanghai 100 million Narwhal Marine Research Center and TeenTalk Parent-child Speech Club. With the support of the Environmental Protection Bureau of Ningbo National High-tech Industrial Development Zone and the Education, Culture and Sports Bureau of Ningbo High-tech Zone, the scientific activity of World Environment Day advertisement of our college was a complete success. The event was followed by China Ocean News and local media of Ningbo throughout the day.
