Personal Statement of Work
Alan Stone's group explores the interconnection between aqueous speciation and pathways and rates of chemical reactions in natural and engineered aquatic systems. Small, systematic changes to reactants are used to explore structure-property and structure-reactivity relationships that provide the basis for making chemical predictions.
His group pioneered quantitative approaches towards exploring chemical reactions at mineral/water interfaces, most notably
(i) inorganic and organic ligand adsorption;
(ii) surface-catalyzed hydrolysis;
(ii) ligand-assisted dissolution;
(iii) ligand-assisted desorption;
(iv) reductive dissolution; surface-catalyzed redox reactions.
Principles of coordination chemistry are used as the basis for addressing metal ion-organic interactions.
The Stone group has lead efforts to employ capillary electrophoresis for monitoring the progress of environmentally-relevant reactions and for discerning metal ion and chelating agent speciation.
Applications include sources/sinks for manganese nodules and other marine resources, reactive transport of radionuclides and other contaminants in sediments and aquifers, the balance between efficacy, environmental impact for synthetic compounds (e.g. pesticides, plant growth regulators, detergent builders, brightening agents), improvements in water treatment plant chemistries, and the speciation and chemical transformations of siderophores and other metallophores, signaling compounds, and allelochemical natural products in soils.
