From October to December 2024, Tongji University conducted the selection process for the "Academic Star" (undergraduates) and "Academic Pioneer" (postgraduates) awards. The initiative aims to promote a culture of scientific excellence, enhance innovation and entrepreneurial education, and encourage adherence to academic standards while advancing research in frontier fields to serve societal development.
Following a comprehensive selection process, 6 undergraduates and 10 postgraduates were awarded the titles of "Academic Star Exemplars" and "Academic Pioneers," respectively. Among them, two students from CESE were honored: Jiao Mingshuo, an undergraduate from the Class of 2021, was named "Academic Star," and Wang Hong, a doctoral candidate from the Class of 2022, was named "Academic Pioneer."

Jiao Mingshuo is a Communist Party member and former chair of the College’s Party and League Committee. He has led one national and one university-level innovation project, published two papers as the first/second author, and co-applied for two patents. He has received numerous honors, including the National Scholarship, Shanghai Scholarship, Baosteel Excellent Student Award, and awards in various national and provincial innovation competitions.

Wang Hong, a doctoral candidate under Professor Dai Xiaohu, focuses on innovative biological nitrogen removal processes for wastewater treatment. During his studies, he has published 15 SCI papers, applied for five invention patents, and participated in several national and international conferences. He has also led a National Natural Science Foundation project and contributed to multiple key national research initiatives. Wang has received the National Scholarship for Doctoral Students for three consecutive years.
