In 2023, students achieved the best historical results in the 18th Environmental Science Competition. After two rounds of online letter reviews and final defense meetings, we won five awards: two special prizes, one second prize, one third prize, and one poster prize. The two special prize works came from the team of Academician Xu Zuxin.
The graduate student team led by Professor Ye Jianfeng won the Special Prize and Best Poster Award in the Science and Technology Concept category for their work “Water and Land Co-prosperity, Grinding to Eliminate Black-Precision Positioning Technology for High Organic Sediment in Urban Drainage Pipes.” The project targets the problem of serious misconnections in China’s urban drainage systems, which leads to the direct discharge of pollutants on rainy days and repeated black and odorous water bodies in rivers. For the first time, they developed a precision positioning technology for highly organic sediment in urban drainage pipes, developed corresponding online monitoring equipment, and achieved precise and intelligent positioning of ditch sediment with a high organic content. The pollution control concept, positioning technology, and online monitoring equipment proposed for the first time in this study are currently being promoted and applied nationwide.
The undergraduate team led by Professor Dong Bin won the only special prize in the Science and Technology Physical category for their work “Community Wet Waste In-situ Resource Technology Equipment Based on Ultra-High Temperature Aerobic Fermentation”. The project targets the problem of the easy rot and odor of wet garbage at community garbage sorting points and high transportation costs. In this study, small-scale ultra-high-temperature aerobic fermentation equipment was used to quickly degrade wet garbage in situ at collection points. The project results were piloted in ten cities and rural communities to achieve good demonstration effects.
The graduate student team led by Professor Chai Xiaoli won second prize in the Science and Technology Physical category for their work “Development of Micronano Composite Powder Carrier Materials and Their Application in Upgrading and Expansion of Sewage Treatment Plants.” This project developed a cyclone separation unit with the function of selective separation and recovery of sludge, solved the contradiction between phosphorus-accumulating bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in the generation cycle, realized the “double mud age” of sludge, and significantly improved the efficiency of synchronous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the system. This technology has been widely used in nearly 20 provinces and cities across the country, and in more than 30 new, upgraded, and expanded projects of sewage treatment plants, achieving significant environmental, social, and economic benefits.
The graduate student team led by Professor Wu Deli won the third prize in the Science and Technology Concept category for their work “Low-Carbon Transformation and System Reconstruction of Industrial Water Sources: Towards Sustainable Clean Production under the Electrochemical-Thermal-Cooking Cycle Fusion System”. The project starts from the perspective of green-environmental-resource, this work proposes the enrichment and recovery of heavy metals, as well as the evaporation production of clean water, to achieve the classification of resources from heavy metal salt water to heavy metal salt, sodium salt, and clean water. This scheme forms a two-step resource recovery path by understanding the design of solar evaporation and capacitive deionization structures.
