On November 24-28, 2019, the "2019 Innovation Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery" jointly organized by Tongji University and the International Water Association (IWA) was successfully held in Shanghai. The conference set up workshop, subject matter expert reports, sub-venue reports, poster presentations, technical visits and other links, which attracting more than 300 participants from 20 countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy. The conference lasted for 5 days, mainly focusing on 8 topics with the in-depth discussion, which including nitrogen removal and recovery, phosphorus removal and recovery, nutrient removal and recovery process, and modeling, optimization and control of the whole process of wastewater treatment plant.
The conference was hosted by Tongji University, IWA, State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, National Joint Research Center for Sustainable Urban Water System, Shanghai Institute of Pollution Control and Ecological Safety, and was undertaken by Shanghai Urban Construction Design and Research Institute of Tunnel Co., Ltd. (Group) Co., Ltd., and obtained Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., DHI Danhua Water Conservancy Environmental Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Shanghai Chengtou Sewage Treatment Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Parsono Biotechnology Co., Ltd. Professor Wu Jiang, Executive Vice President of Tongji University, gave a welcome speech for the meeting. Vice President Wu Jiang extended a warm welcome to the arrival of domestic and foreign scholars, industry experts and researchers, and introduced the achievements of Tongji University in the field of water pollution control. He believed that the holding of this conference would play an important role in strengthening internal communication and cooperation in the industry, and wish the international conference a successful completion.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Dai Xiaohu, the chairman of the conference and the dean of the College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University, and Dr. Sudhir Murthy, the senior vice chairman of IWA and the chairman of the IWA nutrient salt removal and recovery expert group. Prof. Mark van Loosdrecht, Dr. Du Rui, Dr. Beverley Stinson, Dr. Charles Bot and Prof. Li Yongmei respectively gave wonderful topic reports and had active discussions with the participants.

The conference is organized around 8 topics and set up 3 sub-venues. More than 70 experts and scholars from all over the world introduced their research results in detail and sparked heated discussions. In addition to the oral report of the conference, the conference also set up a poster display session to enhance the interaction of participants. Through selection by the scientific committee of the conference, five young scholars from Tongji University, Shenzhen Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and Zhengzhou University won the Best Poster Award.

The closing ceremony of the conference was hosted by Dr. Tao Li, President of IWA Greater China, and Professor Li Yongmei from Tongji University, co-chair of the conference. Professor April Gu, Professor Peter Vanrolleghem, Chief Engineer Zheng Xingcan, Dr. Pusker Regmi, Dr. Guihe Tao and Chief Engineer Zhang Chen performed wonderful theme report, the conference concluded successfully.
During the technical tour, participants visited the Shanghai Shidongkou Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Mengqingyuan Environmental Theme Park to learn more about the current status of the Shanghai Wastewater Treatment Plant and the history of Suzhou Creek governance.

The successful convening of the 2019 Innovation Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery provides a platform for domestic and foreign researchers to exchange in the field of wastewater treatment and resource recovery, and stimulates a new generation of new wastewater treatment technologies for nutrient removal and resource recovery. It provided an opportunity and was well received by scholars at home and abroad.
